This is my personal portfolio. I collect as little as I can: no advertising, no tracking cookies, and only privacy-friendly visit counts. This page explains the small amount of information the site does handle, and what you can ask me to do with it.
Who I am
jamesnewton.co is run by me, James Newton, a product designer based in the UK. I'm responsible for any personal information the site collects. You can reach me at james@jamesnewtondesign.com.
What I collect, and why
The Surf Runner scoreboard. If you choose to put a score on the board, I store the name and optional message you enter, your score and the time you submitted it. Your name and message are shown publicly on the board. I also get a private notification of each new entry, through a messaging service, so I can remove anything inappropriate. Submitting is entirely optional; the game works without it.
Your IP address is used to limit how many scores can be submitted (five an hour), to stop abuse. It is held for about an hour and then deleted automatically.
Server logs. Like most websites, the hosting provider keeps standard technical logs of requests (such as IP address, browser type and the page asked for) to run and secure the service.
Visit statistics.I use Vercel Web Analytics to see which pages are read. It records the page, the site that referred you, your browser, device type and country. It doesn't use cookies or store your IP address: visits are counted with an anonymous identifier that resets every day, so it can't follow you across sites or over time.
If you email me,I'll have whatever you send, and use it only to reply to you.
Cookies and local storage
The site sets no cookies. It saves a few small preferences in your own browser's local storage so the site works the way you left it: your theme choice (if you pick light or dark over your system setting), your Surf Runner high score, and whether you've already seen the “try me” hint on the game button. These never leave your device, and you can clear them at any time through your browser settings.
The legal basis
Under UK data protection law, I rely on your consent for anything you submit to the scoreboard, and on my legitimate interest in running, protecting and improving the site for rate limiting, server logs and visit statistics.
Who else is involved
The site is hosted by Vercel, which also provides the visit statistics and the database that stores scoreboard entries. Scoreboard notifications pass through the messaging service I use for them. These providers process data on my behalf and may store it outside the UK, with the safeguards UK law requires. I never sell your information or share it for marketing.
How long I keep it
Scoreboard entries stay on the board until I remove them or you ask me to. Rate-limit records expire after about an hour. Server logs are kept by the host for its standard period.
Your rights
You can ask me for a copy of the information I hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, including removing a scoreboard entry. Email me and I'll respond within a month. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.
Changes
If what the site collects changes, I'll update this page first and change the date at the top.
